KSU Tuscarawas Softball Upsets #5 New Kensington

Game 1:

In a tightly contested showdown, Kent State University at Tuscarawas delivered a statement win on Saturday, closing out No. 5-ranked Penn State New Kensington, 2-1, and handing the Lions their first loss in USCAA play this season.

The game was defined by dominant pitching and timely execution, with both teams locked in a 1-1 tie heading into the later innings. The breakthrough came in the top of the eighth, when Edwards grounded out but drove in what proved to be the game-winning run, giving Tuscarawas a narrow 2-1 advantage they would not relinquish.

Kent State Tuscarawas leaned heavily on a stellar performance from Lemmel, who earned the win with an impressive outing. The right-hander went the distance, allowing just three hits and one run across eight innings while walking one and striking out two. Lemmel kept the potent New Kensington lineup off balance throughout, delivering under pressure against one of the top teams in the USCAA.

Penn State New Kensington, ranked No. 5 nationally, showcased strong pitching of their own, tallying six strikeouts and limiting Tuscarawas' offense. However, a costly error in the top of the fifth inning allowed Tuscarawas to tie the game at one, shifting momentum and setting the stage for the late-inning heroics.

Offensively, Tuscarawas relied on a balanced effort, with Cress, Lillis, Van Horn, Kliffel, Lovelace, Edwards, and Reyes each contributing a hit. While no single player dominated at the plate, the collective approach proved enough to break through against a tough New Kensington squad.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Kent State Tuscarawas, not only as an upset over a top-five opponent but also as a defining moment early in the Coach Schall Era.

Game 2:

Kent State University at Tuscarawas showcased resilience and competitiveness against one of the nation's top teams on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with No. 5 Penn State New Kensington and proving they can go toe-to-toe with elite USCAA competition.

After capturing a statement 2-1 victory in Game 1, Tuscarawas carried momentum into the second matchup and competed early before ultimately falling 7-0.

Despite the final score, Tuscarawas showed flashes throughout Game 2, particularly in the early innings. The defense held strong at times, including turning a key double play, and the pitching staff worked to keep the game within reach through the first half.

Reyes got the start on the mound and battled through four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while working around traffic on the bases. The bullpen efforts kept the game manageable before Penn State New Kensington used a four-run fifth inning to pull away.

Offensively, Tuscarawas faced a strong outing from New Kensington's starter but still found opportunities. Despite not tallying many hits in the second game, Kent State Tuscarawas consistently made solid contact, but struggled to place the ball into open gaps in the defense.
